A River in Flood

Introduction

What is flood? We have observed that most of the rivers in Pakistan are full up to the brim during the rainy season. Some of these rivers are so flooded that they bring destruction to population, fields and crops. Once, I visited my uncle during the month of August. He lives at Charsadda, a village on the banks of the river Kabul. Charsadda is one of the beautiful district of KP province and popular for floods because most of the northern rivers are passes through it. There are heavy rains during the month of August. Once, it rained for thirty-six hours continuously. The villagers were at a great inconvenience due to the rains. One day, when I woke up, I heard the cries of the people for safety. In the meantime, I heard that the bridge on the Kabul River near Charsadda was carried away by the torrential rains.

Panic among the People.

As I was listening to the cries of the people, a farmer came and broke the news that babbling water of Kabul River were hurtling towards our village. He further told that rain will destroy the village, the streets and the roads. We rushed towards the said village. Soon, I saw it submerging the streets and roads with full force. The forceful currents of the water carried with them animals-cows, buffaloes, goats, lambs and dogs. Many trees were also uprooted and were carried away by the strong currents of the water.

Destruction of Flood

The flood water entered in the houses within two hours. I saw from the top of my house that the plight of the village was pathetic. The flood water collapsed many houses. The powerful currents of water washed away many mud made walls. Its water inundate the entire village in a moment and looks like an island in the sea. There was water and water everywhere in the area.

Relief Operation

The flood caused a great harm to the property and the animal life of the village. Many houses collapsed and huts were submerged under water. People of the village become homeless in a moment. In the meanwhile, Pakistan Army started rescue operation in the flood area. Pakistan Navy arranged the boats and ferries for the rescue of flood victims. The people were rescued through helicopters. The boats carried away the properties and animals of flood victims. Various NGO and welfare organization distributed parched grams, clothes and garments among the flood victims. The people were badly harmed by this flood. Loss of life and property was worth millions of rupees.

Compensation

The government also announced compensation for the flood victim area. Pakistan Army and civil district administration evacuated the displaced persons to a camp. The flood bring many diseases in the village. The Army and district administration organized several medical camps. They provided necessary medical treatment and vaccines to the victims. Such a great tool of property and animal wealth had never been taken by floods.

Some of the after-effects of floods were all the more harmful. Some old village men said that this was the worst ever flood in their living memories.
